It can be quite a challenge staying healthy while you are travelling, especially when you are travelling abroad. Getting sick on a vacation is the last thing anybody would want, being sick when you are thousands of miles away from home and family can be even more devastating. Taking every step to playing it safe can mean a major difference between a good trip and a bad one. First, find out as much as possible. Is the climate there very different to what you are used to? What is the altitude? What are the local dishes like? If you happen to have any food allergies, you might to do some research on the kind of foods available, to the extent of finding out the specific ingredients in the meals that you are likely to have, and then stick to them once you arrive at your destination. Health hazards or alerts if any, make sure you are aware of this, you could call your travel agent for this.
Make sure that you are at your best before you leave. Get plenty of fluids, relax, get plenty of rest, avoid stress or atleast try to minimize. For additional support of your immune system, you could consider takin multivitamins. It also would be a good idea to go for a health check up, just to be sure and be on the safe side. Your body and your limits, only you know best, what suits you and not, Illnesses if any, keep vigilant for the things which triggers them.
If you are not sure or have found out about the safety or suitability of the food and drink in a local eatery, it is best to avoid them. Food poisoning surely will be bad enough, especially having it in a foreign land surrounded by unfamiliar people. Try and avoid the street side vendor eateries and foods and always take bottled water. Go only for simple, freshly prepared meals in restaurants that appear to be clean.
Along with good nourishment by way of good food and safe drinking water, getting adequate rest is also very important. Moving and sightseeing continously could be exhausting. Keeping the body in an exhausted state will put you in an increased risk of becoming ill. With the thought of missing out, it might be tempting to see everything there is, or go partying every other night, this will only increase the exhaustion. The idea is to enjoy but at the same time take care of yourself too. Schedule breaks in your sight seeing or shopping, and target to be back before the wee hours of the morning. Being in a time zone of what you are used to, will make you feel more tired, more sooner than you normally would. This is normal, only thing important is to allow and let your body catch up with you.
It is always best and advisable to find out about any immunization requirements, and get the same done, for your own safety. This is true especially for some countries. It is better to get a shot or two now than be sick and sorry while abroad later.
The whole idea is to prepare and take steps after gathering the informations and requirements so that the whole trip is fun and enjoyable.
