Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky: An Accurate Movie Summary

By Alfredo Ross

At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in May, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky debuted. This film is about two renowned people who were having an intense love affair. They are French designer Coco Chanel and Russian musician Igor Stravinsky.

The French film is based on the fictional novel that Chris Greenhalgh wrote in 2002. While the book and the movie are fictional, both are based on true events. Greenhalgh wrote about Coco Chanel's alleged affair with Stravinsky during the time they both lived in Paris in 1920.

This is also the same year that famous, Chanel No. 5 was created. 2009 was a big year for movies based on the life of the famed designer. That same year, Audrey Tautou starred in a film called Coco avant Chanel that was directed by Anne Fontaine. Coco avant Chanel was not as big of a success as this one.

The plot of the movie is rather engaging. The movie starts off in Paris, France in the year 1913. Coco Chanel is attending the premier a rather outrageous performance called Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. The ballet was extremely controversial which actually caused the audience to break out into the most well known musical riots ever.

The scores and choreography shocked the audience which, at the time, was more accustomed to demure classical ballet. However, Coco Chanel was not appalled by the ballet as most people were. She is intrigued, especially with Stravinsky rushes angrily out of the theater.

It is seven years before the designer and the musician come into contact again. In 1920 Coco is a world renowned designer with a successful business. However, she is mourning her last lover, Arthur Capel. She meets Igor when he is forced to flee from Russia after the Russian Revolution. He has fled to France for safety. There is an instant attraction between the two.

Chanel offers Stravinsky and his family the use of her villa located on the outskirts of Paris. While he, his wife, and their children are living in the villa, Stravinsky and Chanel begin a closeted love affair. They have an intense passion for one another that shows in their work. Creatively, their work gets better. It is during their love affair that Igor's music takes on a more freeing tone. It is also during the affair that the famous perfume, Chanel No. 5 is released. The love affair quickly comes to an end when Stravinsky's wife is made aware of the affair.

Jan Kounen directed the movie and Chris Greenhalgh wrote the screenplay along with the book. The movie was filmed in three languages, French, English, and Russian. It stars Ann Mouglalis as Coco Chanel and Mads Mikkelson as Igor Stravinsky. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky opened around the world after it's premier at the Cannes Film Festival. The initial reviews were mixed. The film was said to be sophisticated but it lacked imagination. It also was not as developed as the book and left the viewer wanting more.
